Sprout Bakery

76 James Street, Fortitude Valley

With weekend line-ups out the door and all the fresh bread, pastries and treats you could ever dream of, this cosy little joint is a one-stop shop for all your sweet-tooth needs. Pop into their James Street digs to see what all the hype is about for yourself and you could be indulging in Sprout Bakery's signature sourdough, delectable range of croissants (our favourite is the twice baked chocolate), or a few flaky tarts, scrolls and danishes.

Agnes Bakery

85 James Street, Fortitude Valley

Judging by the queues forming around the block before opening time every morning, Agnes Bakery is doing baked goods right. On the racks behind the counter you'll find dense and flaky kouign amanns, dark chocolate and wattleseed cookies, charred Basque cheesecakes and savoury pastries laden with a rotating list of toppings like smoked potato, straciatella and fermented chilli. Drool.

Baker D. Chirico

16 Longland Street, Newstead

Beloved Victorian bakery and sourdough Mecca, Baker Di Chirico, has been a tantalising wait for us Brisbanites. Opening only as a weekend pop-up while construction was finished, Baker Di Chirico has kept us on our toes for the past four years waiting for the full opening while our pals down in Melbourne waxed lyrical about the spot (and their sourdough). Not to mention names like Heston Blumenthal also have nothing but praise for Baker Di Chirico. But now, Brisbane, the time is ours. Take your time pursuing the counter filled with inspired treats from France, Germany and Italy. The unsung hero of their lineup though is their rotating roster of sourdough paninos. We cannot get enough of their mortadella panino.

Beurre Pastries

33 Park Road, Milton

There’s something about pastries being served up in industrial, sophisticated venues that makes them hit just that little bit more (do we have Melbourne to thank for this?). This is exactly what awaits you at Beurre Pastries, specifically, a marble counter lined with a selection of their culinary masterpieces. The menu is broken up into four sections including core items, seasonal treats, monthly specials and a small range of local-only items that you need to be a regular to snatch up. Flavours here are innovative and interesting thanks to owner and patissier Will Leung, who's always churning out new creations like the sesame and matcha cube: a layered cube with a matcha butter spread, dipped in a black sesame glaze and toasted black sesame seeds.

La Bouche

71 Shore St W, Cleveland

is a charming European-inspired bakery and café in Cleveland, offering top-notch espresso, cakes, croissants, pastries, pies, and sourdough breads. Their coffee, a signature blend roasted locally by Bear Bones Espresso, pairs perfectly with a classic croissant, whether you’re enjoying it at one of the cozy benches and tables out front or grabbing it to go. La Bouche also bakes a fantastic selection of sourdough breads, including a gluten-free option, and serves up house-made granola for a wholesome treat.

Christian Jacques

8 Baildon Street, Kangaroo Point

French-style pastries are the name of the game at , so prepare to go into a croissant-induced coma. They’re slinging plenty of varieties alongside other drool-worthy flakey, buttery goods, but the ham and cheese croissant is so good that you’d be mad not to give one a go.

Right down at the river end of Bulimba’s Oxford Street, Darvella popped up in early 2021 and has been wowing locals ever since. There is little wonder why, as the bakery comes to us from Giorgina Venzin, owner of Pawpaw Cafe and one of Brisbane’s hospo icons. After the success of Pawpaw’s pop-up bakeries during lockdown, Venzin and pastry chef Lindsay Krahenbring decided to open a dedicated bakery—and suffice to say their decision was a good one, as the crowds have been clearing the cabinets of doughnuts, pastries and their specialty mini cakes every since.

Reno Fine Patisserie

Eight Mile Plains’ go-to bakery,  serves up the classics with aplomb. But perfectly flaky croissants and crusty baguettes are just the start—their cabinet full of decadent desserts is where you’ll find yourself really spoilt for choice (although the sheer number of different croissants on offer may leave you overwhelmed). Serving up any sweet treat you can think of, the decision becomes extremely hard to choose between a melting moment or a chewy chocolate and caramel brownie. With such a reputation for its skillful staff, quality ingredients and attention to detail, you simply must see Jocelyn’s Provisions for yourself. Whatever you do, don’t leave without sampling a melting moment because they're to die for.
