The Verdict
Formerly an online store delivering deliciously sweet canelés and cakes around Brisbane, Bella & Tortie now has a bricks and mortar location in the Grange, where you'll find an array of delectable baked goods so enticing you won't be able to choose just one.
What's a canelé? We're glad you asked—notoriously difficult to bake, they're a sweet French pastry composed of a crisp, caramelised outer shell and a velvety custard interior. Owner and pastry chef Suzi Unwin has mastered the art entirely, and now creates a decadent range in flavours like salted caramel and raspberry, hazelnut praline, lemon meringue and honey macadamia (a few of them are even gluten-free).
That's not all you'll find behind the counter here though—cop an eyeful of tarts, cakes, millefeuilles, brioche and curry donuts, with gorgeous cakes available to order for special occasions. Cute side note—Bella & Tortie is named for Suzi's two rescue cats.
