If there’s one thing Gold Coasters love, it’s Italian cuisine. What about authentic Italian street food? Now we’re talking. Chuck in a prime location in the heart of Burleigh Heads and you’ve got all the ingredients for the Gold Coast’s next big thing.
Meet . This exciting new Italian street food concept fuses traditional Italian with modern favourites, brought to us by the teams behind local stalwarts and Nestled in James Street's Burleigh Arcade, on the former site of RaRa Ramen, the scent of freshly toasted piadinas floating down the street is sure to lure in many a passerby.
The concept of Piada Co was sparked by a trip to Italy in late 2023 and, boy, aren’t we glad. Born from a deep passion for European cuisine and top-notch hospitality, the team is dedicated to their mission in bringing damn good Italian street food to the Gold Coast. They describe Piada Co as ‘modern Italian street food like you’ve never seen before. We’re all about chopping the boundaries of tradition and taking a stand against boring food.’ We dig it.
The extensive menu stars piadinas alongside authentic street favourites including suppli (arancini), burrata bowls and calamari fritti. Now, what’s a piadina you ask? The team tells us that food carts on every street corner in Romagna have been pumping out these bad boys for a very, very long time. Essentially, it's a round flatbread cooked crispy and stuffed with whatever you could possibly conjure up. There are many traditional variations of the piadina, but the Piada Co team are certainly mixing things up. We can’t reveal too much—you’ll know when the flavours smack you in the tastebuds.
Some of the star piadinas include the mortadella piadina stuffed with stracciatella, artichoke cream and pickled zucchini, the Meatball Smash with provolone, sundried tomato cream, caramelised onion and rocket, and we can’t go past the halloumi piadina loaded with roasted capsicum, pickled zucchini, caramelised onion, basil pesto and rocket. If we had to capture the flavours of Italian summer in one bite, this would be it.
Pair your piadina with cacio e pepe suppli with truffle aioli and you’re ticking all the boxes. Got a sweet tooth? The Nutella piadina and the pistachio cannoli are right up your alley. And if you’re sharing, dig into the mortadella burrata bowl with artichoke cream, pistachio cream and piadina chips. Or just keep it all to yourself, we wouldn’t judge.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Italian street food without a beveragino to pair and Piada Co has got you covered. Take your pick from a plethora of canned fresh frappes, cocktails, beers, wines and juices. We promise, Aperol spritz and piadinas are a match made in heaven.
Piada Co is slated to open 10 August 2024. We’ll keep you updated with more details.
