The Verdict

Employees Only is an iconic New York City speakeasy. It's the total epitome of NYC—intimate, moody and sophisticated without forgetting the irresistible, thumping heartbeat of one of the world's most irresistible, enchanting cities.

The West Village Bar has opened in a brand new Sydney location, and to be honest, we don’t know how to process this. To give you an idea of how next-level this place is, the NYC hot-spot is a regular feature on the ‘World’s Best Bars’ list. Co-founder Dushan Zaric is leading the Sydney version and bringing with him a bunch of the famous Employees Only cocktails and the bar's signature food.

This one has opened in the heritage-listed basement on Barrack Street in the CBD with interior designer Tim Leveson responsible for the look and feel. You’ll find signature elements torn from the West Village bar, like the bright red neon ‘Psychic’ sign. Late-night dinner is also a glorious thing here (between the hours of 11pm and 2:30am) so you'll no doubt be hitting this one up after a few post-work drinks.

Now, more importantly, the drinks. The concoctions here are from a higher-order with EO classics such as ‘Manhattan Cocktail’ with Knob Creek Rye stirred with Italian Vermouth, Grand Marnier and dashes of Angostura bitters. For a new twist on things, these guys are also whipping up an absolute newbie called ‘The Down Payment’, an unusual but seriously tasty concoction of Barsol Pisco, shaken with avocado, fresh lime, Strega, Suze and Aqua Faba.

Employees Only will open to the public Saturday 24 November, 9pm.
