Bar Freda’s is back in Chippendale. After a few years on its popular corner site in Darlinghurst as Cafe Freda’s, the new site—part of nightlife destination The Abercrombie—is split over two storeys in heritage terrace houses, and continues co-founders Dave Abram and Carla Uriarte’s mission to bring people together over food, drinks and music.

On the ground floor, there’s bar stool seating and a bay window booth looking out to Abercrombie Street and the 1850s-era church across the road, while upstairs has more booths, the bar, and a dedicated DJ room under a giant disco ball. The new location and partnership with Solotel, which owns The Abercrombie, also sees the duo take control of the music programming and creative direction across the Chippendale pub’s rooftop, club and bar.

“Bar Freda’s draws inspiration from late-night bars in Berlin and other great after-hours cities, and American dive bars that have maintained their character and warmth over many decades of servicing a city's social needs,” says Dave.

Echoing the simple and satisfying fare of past iterations, Bar Freda’s menu lists snacks, pastas and deli-inspired sandwiches like a Reuben-style stack with beef pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Freda’s house dressing.

“With our menu at Bar Freda’s, you’ll find elements of diners or a deli counter in New York. Lots of things to share and big hot sandwiches to fill you up. It's meant to be fun and easy, but filled with quality and comfort,” Dave says.

Other picks include snacks like oysters, cheese and charcuterie; lasagne croquettes served with hot sugo; and a fried prawn roll with Thousand Island dressing, pickles and lettuce. The pasta lineup includes mafaldine with crab, tomato, chilli and pangrattato, or a rigatoni with eggplant ragu and stracciatella.

A selection of “easy drinking” wines from Aussie and international producers focuses on minimal-intervention drops more than any particular production style, and seeks to spotlight makers doing things with intention.

The fun-filled cocktail list offers frozen sips like an espresso martini with salted caramel topped with dairy-free whip, or a matcha colada blending rum, matcha, salted coconut and fresh pineapple. There are also three margaritas, a pickle-tinged house martini, and the Fishbowl G&T with seasonal infused gin and garnishes, plus long-term Freda’s favourite the Mega Mate with vodka and caffeinated Club Mate.

“We’ve cherry-picked all the drinks we love, with a focus on fun and nothing too heavy. A rotating specialty tap from our friends at Grifter. Slushies using high quality and specialty ingredients. Lots of great boutique non-alcoholic options… Something for everyone,” says Carla.

Happy hour runs Tuesday–Saturday between 5pm and 7pm, with $7 schooners, $12 frozen cocktails, $15 Tommy’s margaritas and 10% off bottled wine prices, and regular club nights will spotlight local DJs, producers, creatives and promoters.
