The Tiny Cabin Stays Bringing Big Appeal To Denmark

By

“What’s the deal with tiny cabins, anyway?”

Straight out of a Seinfeld episode, my partner asked the question from the driver's seat of the car about half-way through our 4.5 hour journey to Heyscape’s Tiny Cabins in Denmark. Truth be told, as the initiator of the trip, I didn’t have an answer.

My experience with tiny cabins was all but nonexistent, and my history with Denmark was limited to a trip down south when I was 12, when my mum drove me down to attend a seven day violin camp, only to realise once we hit Albany that I had, in fact, forgotten to pack my violin. Turn the car around. Try again tomorrow.

A quick Google for some details informed us both that , Heyscape’s classic cabin that we were headed for, was only 20 square metres, which prompted yet another question: how much space do you really need to unwind?

The purpose of this trip was to do just that. The year had kicked off in chaos: weddings, work deadlines, family visiting from overseas and the sense of impending doom as the world appears to be changing right before our eyes. I hoped that a few nights off-grid would be the antidote to the anxiety. No social commitments. No emails. No scrolling in bed.

Turns out, 20 square metres is plenty.

When we eagerly entered the , I was flooded with an immediate sense of calm. The first thing I noticed was the natural plywood panelling cladding the walls, the grain patterns and knots in the wood bringing the natural beauty of the surroundings indoors. Burnt orange bedding and bouquets of dried native flowers added to the warmth, but above all else, form follows function: a queen size bed, equipped kitchenette and relatively roomy bathroom had been expertly Tetris'd into place. There was plenty of room to move about and never once did we feel cramped. The fact that the cabin is nestled on an 880 acre oceanfront farm, visible through the floor-to-ceiling window, aids in the illusion of interior space.

Outside, the deck just might be bigger than the cabin itself, kitted out with a high table, flash barbeque, lounge area and sunken bathtub. From every vantage point, you’re surrounded by rolling hills and towering Karri trees, the lights and sounds from cars on the highway below almost non-existent.

After settling in, we poked around the property nursing glasses of red from a nearby winery, watching the sunset to nothing but the cackle of kookaburras, rustle of the trees and the crunch of our boots on the earth below.

The next 48 hours were the tranquil escape I had hoped for: sleep ins courtesy of black-out curtains, slow mornings with coffees on the deck, swims in the crystal clear waters of Greens Pool, a very generous wine tasting with local legend Trix at Singlefile Winery, an elevated pub meal (plus a few too many pints) at the recently renovated Denmark Hotel, and outdoor baths under the stars.

had served its purpose. If I was at all blasé about tiny homes prior, Heyscape’s eucalyptus-scented, cute-as-a-button cabin plonked in the middle of a paddock changed that notion entirely.

As we reluctantly peeled off the plush robes, packed up the car and began the easy drive back to Perth, I felt lighter, calmer and free from the weight of the world. Sometimes, a small space is all you need to find a lot of peace.
