A Revamped Denmark Hotel Brings Cosy Chic To The Great Southern

By

Just one year shy of its 100th birthday, the Denmark Hotel is in the best shape of its life. Standing on the corner directly opposite the Denmark River since 1926, it’s back open and pouring pints after a four-month-long transformation that’s got the approval of locals.

There’s now a casual public bar, classy dining room, boutique bottle shop and on-site accommodation, but anyone who might have been concerned about this iconic community pub losing its soul needn’t worry.

The recent renovation is a masterclass marrying old with new. The existing bones of the 99 year old pub shine through modern updates: there’s been a fresh lick of paint and restoration of heritage features like brick fireplaces and the original Jarrah floorboards.

Inside at the bar, find 14 rotating tap beers—an equal mix of classics and crafts—plus a generous number of wines by the glass and cocktails, perfect for sipping in the sun on the wrap-around terrace to a soundtrack of live music.

The kitchen is headed up by a local, executive chef Ali Osborne. A well-known and much-loved figure in Denmark, Osborne’s menu lets the locally-grown produce shine. Comforting pub classics include a parmi, schnitzel, battered fish and chips and Great Southern Scotch fillet, showing off local beef in all its glory. There’s more refined plates peppered throughout, too, like sesame WA prawn toast fingers, Denmark lamb kofta, ricotta gnocchi with mushroom ragu, and Vietnamese-style chicken salad.

The adjoining boutique bottleshop, Denmark Drops, is a one-stop-shop for wines from the Great Southern. The wine line-up has a huge regional representation—the walls are bound by bottles from familiar giants, family-run vineyards and lesser known micro-wineries from the area. If you’re looking for one of Singlefile’s famous Chardonnays or a funky, local, left-of-centre natty, you’ll find both (and a whole lot more) at the Drop, as well as a tighter selection of beers, ciders, seltzers, spirits and snacks.

There’s also a bookable tasting room in the works that will soon operate as a centralised cellar door for tutored tastings, as well as serving as a space for private dining experiences and small-scale functions.

On the other side of the pub is the Lodge: Denmark Hotel’s clean, comfortable, contemporary accommodation. Do not underestimate the restorative power of a night at a country pub. 24 meticulously renovated and styled spaces, with colour palettes inspired by the natural beauty of the region, gives travellers and tourists a place to relax and recharge after a day of driving or winery hopping. There’s three different types of rooms catering to solo travellers, couples, families or groups of friends, and each is kitted out with a flat-screen TV, ceiling fan, mini fridge, tea and coffee station, and modern bathroom with Appelles products.

The Denmark Hotel isn’t just a place to eat, drink, and rest—it’s a celebration of Denmark’s community, history and producers. Whether you’re in town for a pint, a plate or a pillow, the Denmark Hotel has you covered.

Cheers to nearly a century of hospitality, and many more to come.
