The Verdict

The Penny Drop began as a quaint little coffee pop-up shop and has now transformed into a 100-seater contemporary restaurant serving up beautifully plated food in the newly refurbished ATO building in Box Hill.

True to the Box Hill culture, their modern Australian menu has notes of playful Asian ingredients throughout their breakfast, lunch and dinner range. Expect to see all your Asian flavour favourites such as kaffir lime, coconut, kimchi, and of course, the god of all mayonnaise: Kewpie. ALWAYS ask for extra kewpie on the side. If you’re looking to venture out the comforts of smashed avo, we recommend the tea-smoked salmon with spring onion pancake, bean shoot salad, avocado and son-in-law egg. It’s like your Asian version of the smashed avo—only better.

Speaking of smashed avo, you won't find it on this menu because the guys at The Penny Drop are all like “We’re going to out-Melbourne Melbourne and make WHIPPED avo”. That's right, you heard it here first, whipped avo is totally happening. We are officially moving to Box Hill.
