Surreptitiously below popular South Melbourne cafe, Clementine, is its after-dark counterpart: Castlerose. Just descend the spiral staircase, draw back the velvet curtain and you’ll lay your eyes on this intimate 1940s art deco inspired dining room.

The snacks menu is short but refined: confit duck cigars, lobster rolls, and elaborate charcuterie boards. For those wanting something more substantial, there’s wagyu steak tartare, rare seared yellowfin tuna, and a whole (or half) roast chicken.

And if you require a cheesy snack, as most of us do from time to time, you’re going to love the roaming vintage cheese trolley. Yes you read that right, a trolley circles the dining room which has a rotating menu of 15 artisanal cheeses ripe for your picking.

As if you haven’t already booked a table, the drinks list will be the icing on the cake (or the red wine in the margarita). Sure the wine list is 150 bottles strong, but it’s the classic cum quirky cocktails that got us. Our top recommendation is The Devil’s Margarita, in which you’ll find the usual suspects (tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, agave) with the cheeky addition of a red wine float.
