THE VERDICT
The pair behind Johnston Street’s ‘70s-style bar Gum, Chris and Miles Brooks, are unveiling another decades-inspired eatery next door. This time, they’re bringing us back to the ‘80s with The Continental, or The Conti for short—the duo’s take on grab ‘n’ go deli with a touch of funky flair.
It’s a full-blown old-school clubhouse. The Conti’s forte lies in the standing-room design, curated to bring punters together. The interiors are eye-catching with retro yellow walls, hand-blown tiles, and vibrant artwork to give the spot an antique touch. In the centre sits a pool table, so feel free to challenge a stranger or some mates to a quick game while you wait for your lunch.
Speaking of the food, The Conti is keeping the menu short and sweet with seven sandos and three lunch plates. There’s the namesake specialty called The Continental Cold Cut, stuffed with jamon or salami (your choice) in freshly baked bread. The joint sources all the produce locally and the eatery’s European influence extends to their desserts, with slices of Basque cheesecake up for grabs.
Mingle if you want or sip on an espresso at the standing bar before devouring the goods right outside, at Victoria Park down the street, or go the full experience by dropping into Gum to pair your meal with a bev.
The Continental is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 3pm.
