THE VERDICT
We don’t want to be dramatic but if we could only live off one food group for the rest of our lives, it would be carbs—and in particular, any carb from .
When Dov and Immy Lachovich Marcus flung open the doors of their Elsternwick bakery in 2020, they had one dream: to share a delicious love letter from their childhood with the local community. The result? A lineup of drool-worthy eats from golden challah, sesame bagels, to cinnamon scrolls and feta-topped focaccia. Every bite, telling a story of home and travels afar.
Since then, the family-run bakery has expanded, with outposts in Malvern, McKinnon, Caulfield North, and Chadstone Shopping Centre’s Market Pavilion. No matter which bakery you decide to visit, you’ll be greeted with the same warm service and incredible smells wafting from the ovens.
Not sure what to order? Their sourdough is iconic—and for good reason—it’s made using a 72-hour fermentation process and just three ingredients—flour, salt and water. You can expect a seriously stacked line-up of the doughy stuff too with white, light rye, kalamata olive and caramelised onion combos to choose from.
If we had to pin it down to just one though (you know, all cards on the baking table)—the Sofia loaf is an absolute standout. A non-negotiable, this one is crafted from wholemeal flour, mixed grains and honey—it’s the kind of bread that never makes it home in one piece. You’ll be tearing off chunks straight from the bag. For something heartier, try the baked sandwich pockets, filled to the brim with epic flavour combos like labneh zaatar and shakshuka.
Sweet tooths are in for a treat here as well, with an ever-changing menu that features delights like triple chocolate and hazelnut layered babka cakes, poached pear and walnut crumble danishes, and buttery almond croissants.
Finally, a special shout out has to go to their chocolate croissant, made with a mix of dark and milk chocolate, hazelnut and sea salt. We could happily smash ten.
