The Verdict

The iconic Sorrento corner store founded in 1896 has been reimagined into a timeless restaurant bar and providore. Set at the top end of Ocean Road overlooking Port Phillip Bay, is ready to wine and dine both locals and passers-by. who are also behind stalwarts like Kettle Black, Top Paddock and Higher Ground are the masterminds behind this new seaside venture.

This next era of Stringers will be open from 7am until late, serving up a menu inspired by seasonal Italian flavours all while showing off local produce. But the restaurant bar is looking to move beyond tradition with the venue also including a delicatessen, grocer and an oyster and champagne bar. They’ll be serving breakfast and lunch, with dinners launching soon. 

You can opt for your coffee, pastries and Piadinas to-go from the provider, or, if you’re after a leisurely brunch you can choose from the dine-in menu which includes staples like eggs benedict, french toast and ricotta hotcakes. But if you’re in the mood to truly indulge, road test their smoked salmon open omelette which is topped with caviar, Crème Fraiche and dill.

This food-driven venue is designed to bring together both residents and tourists with Stringers Sorrento’s authentic wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas made from a 72-hour rested dough. The lineup of daily extruded pasta is equally impressive with choices including chilli crab spaghetti with gremolata and pappardelle of slow-cooked lamb ragu with salted ricotta. Main courses are equally as enticing, from chargrilled flank steak, crayfish or even house-made rotisserie chicken.

The drinks menu at Stringers doesn’t disappoint with its wide array of wine and signature cocktails, Aperitivi and Digestivi options. You can also count on a number of local and imported beers being on offer.

The interior has been revamped to transport you to the coast of Italy while preserving the bones of the beloved space. Picture original sandstone walls, handmade mustard tiling, grey-washed oak flooring and stainless steel finishings. But the north-facing courtyard is set to be a year-round highlight with its sun-bathed positioning where you can sit and enjoy the sunset over a drink or two.
