THE VERDICT

We came for the adorable fish-shaped savoury waffles (Taiyaki) and stayed for the decadent dark chocolate cake inspired by Bruce Bogtrotter's iconic scene in Matilda. Yugen Tea Bar (YTB) is South Yarra’s newest Asian-inspired brunch spot, and if you're anything like us you’re going to want to try everything. 

On the menu is the Buckwheat Taiyaki, a crispy fish-shaped waffle filled with miso egg, aged cheddar togarashi and served with pickles. Another favourite is the Caramelised Shokupan - toasted Japanese milk bread stacked with with caramelised banana, bacon and maple butter. In a rush? The fresh, colourful salads and made-to-order sandos are where it’s at. 

On the beverage side of things, YTB serves up specialty coffee from much-loved roastery ONA, or take your pick from inhouse teas and matcha lattes. If you’re looking for something stronger, you really can’t go past the Oriental Bloody Mary. 

With a cosy and oh-so-aesthetic vibe, as well as locally crafted ceramics and even housemade dog treats, YTB is an all round excellent South Yarra brunch experience.
