New York Pizza hits different, the result of the mass migrations of Italians into the city in the early 20th century the city’s pizza has carved its very own distinct shape and flavour departing from its traditional origins.

A hallmark of the New York urban pizzeria scene Sal’s Pizza which originally opened in Queens has been slinging NY-style slices since 1975. Over the years their commitment to the pie has grown their legacy as well as their locations which now spread to Auckland in New Zealand, an outpost on Flinders Lane, and now Gertrude Street, Fitzroy.

Landing in 2019 The son of Sal, Brain opened Australia’s first authentic New York Pizzeria in the CBD with all of the ingredients imported straight from the states, ensuring that NYC Burrough style with cheese from Wisconsin, Pepperoni from upstate New York, and tomatoes from California.

Their new expansion now sitting on the end of Gertrude Street in Fitzroy is providing a steady stream of pie enthusiasts with slices of NYC signature pizzas like the Pepperoni, and ‘The Bronx’ a combination of capsicum and Italian pork sausage. True to New York the pizzas are large in stature coming in at a whopping 18-inches, so you can tackle them by the slice or in full alongside other NYC native dishes like buffalo wings and mozzarella sticks for that extra taste of the city.
