The Verdict

There are big shoes to fill when your father is responsible for founding one of Australia's premier pie outfits, Bocastle.  is the latest opening from Pat Cremean who grew up entrenched in a world of pastry and mince.

The new boutique pie shop on Bell Steet in Heidelberg Heights harnesses Pat's deep connection with pastries instilled by his father into a thriving venture that honours timeless pie classics while dabbling in a more contemporary twist.

After embarking on a modest pie-making endeavour during the AFL Grand Final to spark joy with the golden delights in the 2021 lockdown, Pat Cremean received an overwhelming response from devoted Boscastle customers, prompting him to trade in his corporate attire for an apron.

Centred around quality homemade and locally sourced ingredients, the menu is graced with flaky textures and comforting flavours anchored in the Boscastle tradition. Staples of the menu includes the classics, from Aussie beef; chicken with leek and Swiss cheese as well as Moroccan lamb and curried cauliflower and pea pies—but it is the weekly specials that swiftly become coveted favourites. The menu extends beyond pies, offering pasties, quiches and the ever-popular pork and fennel roll.

Crafted through a meticulous process of churning and rolling and daily baking, the short-crust pastry that envelops a wide selection of hearty fillings is top-tier quality—flaky and tender. Enhancing the pie experience are Pieman’s homemade condiments, including the Napoli sauce, chilli jam and their signature tomato sauce, elevating every bite.

The passion for the artistry of butter and flour doesn’t end with savoury pies, paying tribute to the venue’s previous owners Arnolds Swisse Cakes, Piemans serves up a variety of cakes, muffins and slices with the rhubarb crumble cake and velvety vanilla slice standing as formidable contenders, rivalling the adored pies in their own right.

While the establishment is well-equipped for takeaway, serving St Remio coffee, the bench and outdoor street seating create a perfect ambience for patrons to glance through the glass windows to observe the father-son duo testing out pie recipes.
