The Verdict
Like most Melbourne businesses, Penny For Pound has had to pivot due to the pandemic. And pivot they have with a range of baked delights for you to enjoy at home. and you'll be a happy camper.
You might have seen Penny For Pound around the traps. Co-owners Ben Wilson and Matilda Smith provide baked treats and goodies for cafes like Axil, Hardware Societe and Mayday.
Here’s how you find it: head down Lord St, past Minamishima, and you’ll spot a cafe window and a crowd of hungry Melbournians. That’s Penny For Pound. The space isn’t big—a white-tiled pastry wonderland with cute branding from Hungry Workshop—but the deliciousness-per-square-inch is very, very high.
Brace your trousers. We’re talking yuzu meringue cakes and black sesame tarts. Strawberry cheesecake croissants and crispy cronuts, topped with fresh fruit. Just cross your fingers Ben and Matilda are serving up their winning doughnut: fig, honeycomb and orange crème Brûlée (the competition never really had a chance, did they...)
Penny For Pond will be open Friday to Sunday, 8am till sold out (to be safe, get here before midday).
