THE VERDICT

One of Melbourne's best restaurants in the CBD, Shane Delia's Maha Restaurant—named after Delia's wife—has been kicking around for a good 15 years. The city's premier Middle Eastern restaurant underwent a tasteful, moody little renno a few years back, bringing it more in-line with modern Melbourne sensibilities.

There's more than a scoop of Manhattan in the fit-out, with slatted timber frames, pops of bronze and black, contemporary art and a massive wine wall on display. Although while the decor might have one foot in New York, the other is firmly planted in The Middle East.

This place was always Delia's love letter to his culinary roots, and you can taste the passion in every single plate. More recently, award-winning chef Diego Huerta has stepped into the picture as Head Chef, working collaboratively with Delia on a fresh take on the tasting menu.

Be it lunch or dinner, gear up for some seriously impressive plates like Lebanese garlic dumplings with Mount Macedon pine mushrooms sauteed with pine nuts; dry aged duck breast glazed with lavender, dates, and honey; Bowen coral trout with spiced shirazi sauce and orange reduction; and the signature slow cooked lamb shoulder. For dessert? Don't pass up the Turkish Delight filled doughnuts with rosewater honey and walnut ice cream.

If you're up for a nightcap, consider popping next door to sibling cocktail bar, Jayda.
