THE VERDICT

Pascoe Vale South has a new all-day brunch spot that’s begging you to feel at home, Emil’s. The space is packed to the brim with memories and cosy vibes—once their childhood home, brothers John and George El-Khoury have refurbished their parents' milk-bar into a delicious destination, keeping much of its raw aesthetic from their childhood. 

This spot is bursting with history—originally opened in 1978 by Emil and Houda El-Khoury, the milk-bar was a locally cherished place; they raised their six children in the two-bedroom flat out the back, and the brothers made it their mission to keep their heritage pumping with a crisp new take. 

You can expect to see a bright and relaxed fit-out designed by Humble Architects, providing a nod to their childhood, keeping the original fireplace, milk-bar signage, ceiling features and brickwork. 

“We were all born here, we’ve cracked our heads, fallen and done everything here … there’s a lot of memories here and when we remove the plaster from the walls you see little marks we put there 30 years ago,” says George.

“When you come back, you see all the memories, every wall, every bit of chalk, it all just brings back memories,” John said.

Renowned Chef Sam Pinzone has curated an appealing Australian menu that pioneers local produce and businesses that's blended with an Arabic influence. Think Turkish eggs with sujuk, hummus shakshuka with spinach pesto or Knafeh spun pastry with pistachio crumb and rose syrup, just to get things started. 

Tying in to the theme of home, each dining room will be named after its original purpose—enjoy brunch in ‘Mum and Dad’s room’ and bask in the nostalgia that is Emil’s. 

John and George have curated this dream with community in mind, and welcome one and all to dine in their childhood home.
