The Verdict

Since 2013, has established itself as one of Melbourne's most desirable Mexican eateries, honouring traditional recipes and ingredients that date back decades. Now, the team behind the beloved tortilla-filled joint in Kensington is opening its second casa in Highett.

Chilpa, which means ‘little child’, will be situated in the space formerly occupied by Hot Lips Haiencda. Through its flavorful menu, the new restaurant will continue to provide the Bayside neighbourhood with traditional Mexican fare.

Kick off your night with a glance at their beverage menu. Order a grapefruit Paloma, an icy cold marg, or even a straight shot (or two) of straight Tequila or Mezcal.

Classics from La Tortilleria, like their renowned, juicy Birria tacos or crispy battered Pescado Fish Tacos with a zingy salad, will be available to order. Don’t skip on the Chilaquiles (aka, real Mexican nachos), which can be loaded with your choice of toppings, including plant-based options like Vecan Barbacoa.

Before you get the bill, make sure to end your sweet tooth with Gerardo’s Abuela’s (grandmother’s) flan, a recipe straight from the family collection, and a cinnamon-spiked horchata.

Chilpa is located at 2 Railway Parade, Highett, and will officially open on March 10, .
