THE VERDICT
Located on the ground floor of the Euro-style Market Lane building, you'll find Chessell & Clarke—the slick Mediterranean diner by culinary masterminds Serge Thomann (i Carusi ii) and Murat Ovaz (previously Yagiz).
Once home to the Square and Compass cafe, the venue has since been transformed into a contrasting, futuristic space designed by Melbourne-based architecture firm Flack Studio
"At Chessell & Clarke, we want to build a family around the space – to us, customers are an extension of our team and just as important as the food we create," says Murat.
With a strong focus on Ovaz's Turkish roots and Head Chef Frank Berardi's (formerly The Melbourne Club) Italian culinary skills, the menu offers a variety of fresh and hearty Mediterranean dishes served on hand-picked porcelain plates.
Signature dishes include Prosecco battered lemon-ricotta packed zucchini flowers, house-made pork and gremolata sausage on a crusty roll with caramelised onions, and Turkish poached eggs with creamy yoghurt, brown butter, sun-dried tomatoes, and sourdough. If you're a sweet tooth, the Middle Eastern PB&J has your name all over it, consisting of a thick-cut seeded bread topped with lashings of tahini and swirling date syrup.
More options can be found in the glass-fronted display, including sweet treats and (mostly) vegetarian salads, as well as a daily rotation of dips and preserves that have all been made in-house.
From May, the eatery will also open its doors for dinner. Alongside an incredible food menu, diners can expect an extensive wine list with selections from local boutique vineyards and international regions such as Italy, Turkey, and France, among others.
