2020 was, without a doubt, a turbulent year. Both bizarre and devastating, it was one of the most memorable in recent history, with every corner of culture—from music to work-life, fashion, sex, travel, and politics—getting shaken to the core. The New York Times called it “The Year of Blur”, paradoxically packed with significant events, but also a year in which time seemed strung out in the void, slowed down, and stretched out indefinitely. 

Sea levels and temperatures aren’t the only things rising year-on-year. So too are a selection of the Gold Coast’s restaurants and cafes, rising to the occasion and doing their bit for the environment.

It’s safe to say we have entered a new era of culpability, and we’re wielding a new set of tools to get us there. We all (hopefully) understand the importance of being Green. It is 2019, after all. Living a sustainable and responsible life is no longer a choice, it’s the only option. From a local perspective, caring for the earth means caring for the Gold Coast’s stunning beaches, clean water, amazing hinterland and diverse wildlife. Enter Gold Coast Green Week, a ten-day festival of activities that celebrate our incredible local environment. This year’s line-up consists of over forty-five events hosted by a range of community organisations and businesses.

Immersive art installations are taking over the world. From the Yayoi Kusama Infinity Rooms to Desert X in Coachella Valley, people are traveling far and wide to experience the indescribable. Enter Meow Wolf, the latest, and no doubt long-lasting, darling of the art world. The artistic collective, which started in the US way back in 2008, has grown from a group of rag tag artists to a multi-million-dollar enterprise that has secured funding from Game Of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin.

Ever since she was a little girl, Esha-Avantha Naidoo has been obsessed with fashion. From flicking through the pages of Vogue and Elle to watching her idol Tyra Banks on Americas Next Top Model, Naidoo was determined to make her mark on the industry. And she’s certainly doing that with the GC local recently picked from 80,000 models in an international casting call to shoot Khloe Kardashian’s latest Good American range in LA.

We all know and love the Gold Coast’s famous culture and arts festival Bleach, but this year’s addition to the cultural celebrations will make the 2019 version one to remember. For the first time ever, production company Strut and Fret have announced their Spiegeltent concept; a kaleidoscope of world-class entertainment all under one massive tent. And when we say entertainment, we mean all kinds of it.

In what will set a new precedent in Queensland’s efforts to offer a world standard in ecotourism escapes, the Spicers Scenic Rim Trail has officially been approved by the government and is on track for completion in late 2019.
