One of the final foodie tenancies at Newstead’s Gasworks finally has a resident, with Nonda dropping into the leafy precinct around the old gasometer. A new spot from the crew behind Rosalie’s Uncle Don, Nonda is more like their other venue, the Sunshine Coast’s Soka, than the very casual Uncle Don, with an upscale vibe thanks to sleek, minimalist interiors and elevated menu.

Nab a spot at either one of the large shared stone tables or the dark wooden tables with green banquet seating lining the walls and settle in for feast. The focus here is on Japanese cuisine, but Korean and Chinese influences are evident across the menu too. You can opt to either stick to small plates like zucchini tempura with black miso jam, edamame and avocado dip with lotus chips and crisp karaage chicken, or go big with feeds like old school whole chicken with roasted honey and garlic sauce, or the wagyu rump cap with wafu, leek and fried garlic. Either way, you won't be walking out hungry, or thirsty thanks to a lengthy drinks list featuring creative cocktails, wines and beers.
