There’s A Silver Lining To Epic Interactive Audio Visual Experience THE LUME Closing

By

After five groundbreaking years,  Melbourne—one of the city’s most iconic immersive art experiences—will permanently close its doors on 1 June, 2025. The announcement comes from Grande Experiences, the global pioneer behind projection-based exhibitions, as they pivot toward next-generation technologies to redefine cultural storytelling worldwide.

Since its launch, THE LUME has left an indelible mark on Melbourne, attracting 1.5 million visitors, employing over 100 local staff, and injecting an estimated $180 million into the Victorian economy. Its acclaimed exhibitions—VAN GOGH, Monet & Friends, Connection, and Leonardo da Vinci: 500 Years of Genius—blended art, music, and cutting-edge tech to create unforgettable sensory journeys. The venue also broke new ground with wellness programs and events, offering experiences unmatched globally.

"THE LUME Melbourne has been a defining chapter in Australia’s cultural landscape," said Bruce Peterson, Founder of Grande Experiences. "We’re grateful to our team, partners, and every visitor who embraced this vision. Now, we’re evolving to push boundaries even further."

The closure reflects Grande’s ambition to harness emerging tech (like VR and AI) for future projects. While THE LUME’s physical space will shutter, its legacy continues through THE LUME Indianapolis and other global installations. Melbourne audiences still have time to experience its magic, including the world-first VR exhibit Finding Vincent, which plunges guests into Van Gogh’s paintings, and Family Sundays (kids free) for a final dose of wonder.

"We’re closing at our peak," Peterson added. "What’s next will be even more revolutionary."

Visit before 1 June to witness THE LUME’s grand finale—and glimpse the future of immersive art.
