North Sydney restaurant and bar Soluna—part of the fresh Walker Street precinct—takes its inspiration from the sun-kissed streets and lifestyle of Los Angeles.
The indoor/outdoor restaurant is divided into a distinct bar space, 110-seat dining room that spreads into an all-weather courtyard, and lounge for after-dinner drinks, with a seafoam palette and pale wood elements throughout.
Fresh but indulgent fare makes up the menu by executive chef Rhys Connell (formerly of The Gantry and Sepia) and head chef Keno Perlas (Margaret, Pacific Club Bondi, Monopole), with global flavours scattered across every category.
“LA-inspired is a mood to me,” says Connell. “It’s relaxed, really fresh, light, and evokes that chilling-in-the-sunshine feeling.”
That feeling translates to the plate with dishes like pressed prawn toast from the Bites & Snacks list; peppered bonito with grapefruit, green olive and marjoram off the Light & Raw selection; and grilled coral trout with peppers and a chilli garlic crunch from the Grilled & Fried offering.
A house-made sourdough spaghetti with roasted garlic miso and black pepper is among Connell’s favourite dishes, while a Wagyu cheeseburger with skin-on fries, share-friendly proteins for groups, and a dedicated childrens menu mean every diner will find something to appeal.
Standout sweets by head of pastry Rhiann Mead (also The Charles Brasserie & Bar, Sol, and Genzo) are a Monte Carlo-inspired ice cream sandwich with layers of coconut sorbet, honey ice cream, coconut dacquoise, rhubarb jam and a coconut honey shortbread; and feta, thyme and honey madeleines with a warm honey dipping sauce for a savoury-sweet finish.
An offering of easy-drinking and approachable wines sits alongside signature takes on much-loved cocktails on the drinks list.
Soluna neighbours sibling venues Genzo, Sol bread and wine, and artisanal providore Una in the Walker Street precinct. Nearby venues Poetica bar +grill and Loulou Bistro, Boulangerie & Traiteur and The Charles Grand Brasserie & Bar and Tiva in the CBD also fall under Etymon Projects' Sydney restaurant portfolio.
