Sydney's bagel scene has scored a new player. Down a leafy street in Redfern, you'll find George Street Deli—a spot for authentic NYC-style bagels, pretzels, and homemade lemonade. 

Led by mother-daughter duo Anna Berlyn and Bernadette Sheppard, the pair have combined their backgrounds in interior design and hospitality to create a cafe that's a little bit inspired by iconic Big Apple delis like Katz and Russ & Daughters. 

Expect a retro vibe, staff in cool monochromatic black and white uniforms, and 50s and 60s-era crooners like Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole on the sound system. 

"Sydney is definitely going through a sandwich obsession, and we feel like there’s a lot of Italian delis around, but there’s a gap in the market for American-style delis selling traditional bagels and pretzels," says Sheppard. 

Layered with homemade "schmears", George Street Deli's menu includes a classic lox bagel with specially-cured smoked trout and cream cheese; there's a pastrami bagel piled with sauerkraut, Russian dressing, and Swiss cheese, and an egg and potato salad bagel with capers, mustard, and dill. 

On the sweet side of life, there are Nutella bagels, crunchy peanut butter bagels, chunky choc chip cookies, and proper Jewish-style chocolate and cinnamon babka served by the slice. Keep an eye out for babka specials too. 

Wash it all down with an icy cold lemonade or charge up your morning with a Will & Co coffee. 

George Street Deli will open on Saturday 27 August 2022.
