170 Grammi is a third Surry Hills pizzeria by Via Napoli and Pizza Fritta 180 owner Luigi Esposito, serving wood-fired, Roman-style pizzas.

On the corner of Crown and Foveaux Streets (the former site of Pizza Fritta 180, which has moved up next door to Via Napoli), 170 Grammi does thin, round Roman-style pizzas that provide a contrast to the chewy Naples-style pies that dominate the slice scene in Sydney.

Why Roman-style? Luigi’s wife and her family hail from the region. “I really wanted to acknowledge her heritage through the business,” he said.

“Sydneysiders love their pizza, so we wanted to give them an alternative style that showcases another beautiful part of Italy,” said Luigi, who has more than 35 years’ experience in pizza making.

Pizzas from the Italian-made, 1.9-tonne pizza oven differ to the offering at Luigi’s other joints—one is topped with his Roman father-in-law’s porchetta recipe plus scamorza, wood-fired roasted potatoes, rosemary and black pepper—with beloved Roman pastas like cacio e pepe and carbonara turned into toppings.

The menu also offers snacks like cheese-filled supply, and cream-filled maritozzi buns for a sweet treat, while drinks include classic Italian aperitivo sips and wine at no more than $65 a bottle.

With indoor seating at tables and a bar counter, plus outdoor dining on the bustling Crown Street, 170 Grammi is a real slice of Rome in the pumping centre of Surry Hills.
