Byron Bay Diner Light Years Brings A Taste Of Modern Asian To Perth

By

Perth has just claimed its very own coastal oasis within the CBD, welcoming Light Years - an Asian Bar and Diner pushing the boundaries of typical Asian dining with a unique setting and menu.

Opening in 2017, Light Years' first location in Byron Bay played around with a modern coastal feel, warm textures, earthy tones and clay-coloured hues. It represented Byron’s warmth, endless sunshine and holiday vibes. Now, Light Years has arrived in Perth as an inner-city sibling, bringing the same upbeat, playful energy but with an evolution of the core concept: a refined feel and sophistication that suits the CBD setting.

Well established in  Byron Bay, Noosa, Newcastle and Burleigh Heads, Perth has become the fifth location of Light Years. Establishing itself in the iconic Gordon Stephenson House on William St, it brings its ultra modern coastal flair to the heritage-listed-building. Light Years has a distinct setting design, offering a different avenue of the brand in every location. Some standout features include the large radius bar, the main centerpiece, the intimate booth seating and warm ambient lighting. I asked co-owner Kim Stephen how he would describe the Perth space.

“We've created a setting that feels both lively and sophisticated, incorporating a mature colour palette, a playful use of form and texture, and the introduction of elements that feel more elevated and in tune with the city’s energy.”

Light Years anticipates a shift from their Byron Bay concept and usual rhythm, prepared for fast-paced weekdays, buzzy evenings and a lively atmosphere. They expect a more corporate crowd here in Perth, especially for lunches, after-work drinks, and business meetups. However, Light Years offers a welcoming  space designed to suit everyone on any occasion. While reservations are recommended, they offer walk-in seating during busy periods.

“Whether it’s a casual dinner with friends, date night, a big group celebration, or even a cheeky solo feast, our space and menu cater to all.” Says Kim. “The vibe is energetic, lively, and social, with contemporary interiors, upbeat music, and a buzzing atmosphere that makes every visit feel like an occasion.”

Light Years is not only bringing the coastal setting to the west, it also brings its fresh Asian cuisine. Think truffled mushroom dumplings, pork belly bao buns, turmeric and coconut curry, as well as a new steak dish with a red dragon sauce made from red miso, chili paste, and pickle paste. Some other cult-favourites on the menu include kingfish ceviche with coconut, chilli and kaffir lime and miso corn ribs. Executive chef and co-owner Robbie Oijvall has developed a menu that combines new and old, crafting dishes that feel familiar to the brand but include an expanded selection.

“Light Years will focus on familiar flavours with a modern twist”, says Robbie. “The cuisine includes elements from Southeast Asia and includes dill, which is used extensively.”

The menu has been designed for sharing, with numerous menu items to try and plenty that will get your taste buds tingling. When you’re ready to order your beverage of choice, turn to their curated wine list which focuses on great sustainable winemakers from the WA region, Australia and the rest of the world which seamlessly complement Asian flavours. The list sees everything from Semillon to more unusual wines like Müller-Thurgau. Their cocktail options are well-loved, with punchy, colourful and flavour-blending options that define the Light Years brand.

You can expect classic favourites as well as some new additions. Their Cherry Cola Negroni is a current favourite of Kim’s.

“The Cherry Cola Negroni brings rich, bittersweet depth with a playful hit of nostalgia.” Kim tells me. “Think campari, sweet vermouth, and gin with 100% cherry juice and our house-made cola syrup. A twist on the classic with dark cherry notes and a subtle cola sweetness.”
