Funny that the first thing I noticed about had little to do with the actual food—rather, it was the artwork on the back wall depicting three women on lilos, eating pasta. I like this place already, had been my immediate thought.
And it's the same joy and celebration of community captured in this image that the owners of this new spot hope to bring to Long Bay. I'm talking about the very talented, very capable Gloria Li and Logan Wang, who sold up their shares in Woozoo (the group behind cafes like Percy and one of my personal faves, Fields) before embarking on this, their first solo venture.
You'll find Kinfolk in a sunny corner of Long Bay Village, across the courtyard from New World. It's cute and cosy, with a stylish yet timeless fit-out once again by the masterminds at Millé (honestly, I don't know how they do it). Light pours through the floor-to-ceiling windows onto the seating inside, which includes a cushy banquette beneath the aforementioned picture, anchored by a row of orb-like lights.
This is where you're likely to find me, sipping on the biggest Supreme coffee I can find, while I peruse what deliciousness to indulge in today (you might even see my friend and editor, Alice, next to me, equally large Thea matcha in hand).
The menu is a gift, with literally every dish nailing the brief (though I suspected that would be the case, given Gloria and Logan's credentials). It's standout brunch-time fare with a tasty twist, complemented by a cabinet stacked with freshly made sammies, sweets, and salads.
Favourite dishes are getting harder and harder to pick at new openings these days (testament to the calibre of Auckland hospitality), but the gluten-free gnocchi might just take the cake. As someone who hasn't yet made an enemy of gluten, I take this to mean it's especially good. Think pillows of fluffy potato, doused in a cashew cream sauce with caramelised onion, almond, truffle oil, and a showering of parmesan for good measure. I think I must be dreaming.
I'm also a huge fan of the chilli prawn scramble, which I'm embarrassed to admit, I'd never actually tried before (if this one's anything to go by, it's clear I've been missing out). Clouds of fluffy egg studded with juicy prawn meat sit perched on slices of sourdough, topped with crunchy pickled onion, a drizzle of punchy chilli dressing, and finely sliced spring onion. Somebody stop me before I literally go Kirby on this and inhale the entire thing.
Rounding out my top picks is the housemade chocolate granola, which I think you'll want to know, contains Whittaker's chocolate (only the best products here, folks). If that's not enough to whet your appetite, perhaps the ginormous portion of coconut yoghurt will—it literally takes up half the bowl. Absolutely beautiful presentation here, too, with juicy orange segments and matching nasturtium leaves, but not so beautiful I won't stick my spoon in it after the obligatory Insta snap, and make a right mess.
And there are at least eight other dishes on the menu, including a vegan soba noodle salad and gluten-free beef hash, which I'm sure will stand you in equally good stead.
I'm no psychic, but all of this makes me think that Kinfolk will be a part of the Long Bay community for many, many years to come. I, for one, certainly hope that's the case.
