The Verdict
An epic new leafy oasis by the legends behind Lucky 8 and Mr Hao has just opened in the heart of Auckland and it will legit blow your mind.
Introducing , Lucky 8’s younger, bigger sibling that’s here to shake up your downtown dining experience by whisking you off to the streets of Vietnam.
Walk through the soon-to-be-transformed Elliott Stables to find the neon-lit spot adorned with dreamy greenery, epic LED light boxes on the ceiling and a long bar with a stalking tiger.
Taking inspiration from the energy and vibrancy of Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City, Lucky 8’s Vietnamese sister bar comprises cosy booths that encircle the space while high tables take centre stage amidst the vibrant atmosphere.
Exposed brick walls are adorned with recessed alcoves where additional bold and daring creatures emerge from the darkness of the jungle.
Take a look at the aromatic cocktail menu—most priced at $8.88—then kick the night off with a “Bu vien haze” a punchy tequila and lychee liqueur concoction with aloe vera foam and dragon fruit, or our personal fave—"Welcome to the Jungle"—guava nectar, spiced rum, triple sec, lime, Tabasco served on crushed ice with chilli guava chips. YUM.
Keen for kick-ons? Try Jungle 8’s twist on a classic espresso martini—the “Phuc-cing recovery”— featuring the infamous military strength Vietnamese Phuc-long coffee, vodka, coffee liqueur, condensed milk and topped with espresso meringue reminiscent of ca phe trung, or Vietnamese egg coffee.
As you would expect, the varied menu features authentic Vietnamese-style street food and while most dishes remain at just $8.88, now you’ll have the chance to dig into larger sharing plates priced at $10 and $12 or even the Jungle Phozilla at $88 that features fresh crayfish, wagyu, beef rib and onions available on preorder. Woof.
Order up a range of dishes for an explosive introduction to the delights of Vietnamese street food. We suggest starting with the wagyu beef ban xeo—top quality wagyu beef nestled into a taco-like shell taco that’s melt in the mouth delicious.
Next, dig into the popping prawns with curry leaf and yuzu aioli, a delicious bahn mi—we recommend the smoked eggplant with truffle aioli and the crispy eggplant with spicy vinegar dressing.
The caramelised pork belly, Xoi Man comprising sticky rice, quail eggs and Vietnamese sausage and the grilled pork and crab bun cha spring rolls are downright delicious.
You’ll basically need to try everything on the menu, so bring the whole crew for the ultimate feast.
Driving? No worries! The team at Jungle 8 have sussed $5 parking at the 130 Albert street car park from 5pm till 12pm (overnight) and for two hours at the weekend. You’ll get one car park discount voucher for every $88 spent. How rad is that?
So what are you waiting for? If you want to be one of the first to try Jungle 8, .

Bistro Saine
Wander down the cobblestones of Saint Patrick’s Square and you might happen upon the luxurious first floor of newly-built Hotel Indigo, housed in a restored heritage building. You can enter through the other side too—the Albert Street entrance blending into the concrete jungle as if it was always there (just look for the elegant Bistro Saine font out front).
Takapuna Surf Club
When you hear the words surf club, what comes to mind? I think of ice cream, pizza, and Alf Stewart (I haven't watched Home & Away in years, but I understand the Summer Bay Surf Club is still standing. Poor old Mr. Stewart, I'm not so sure).
