The Verdict

Paying homage to Japanese izakaya bars,  offers sanctuary at the end of a busy work day. Named after the term shinrin-yoku, meaning "taking in the forest atmosphere", this urban bar invites you to retreat into its dim settings or internal garden and soak in its exotic environment while still being inside The Welder, at the heart of Christchurch.

Bar Yoku makes Japanese bar snacks its own, combining oriental ingredients with European flavours to create a beautiful blend of east and west. Don't miss out on the sushi tacos - rice is used instead of tortillas to house a filling of your choice, such as soft shell crab, tempura prawn or wagyu beef. For a more authentic Japanese bar dish, try the yakitori. Marinated and barbequed chicken pieces, you can choose a thigh or breast piece, or a knee joint or heart if you're feeling adventurous.

Bar Yoku also offers a delightful selection of craft beers, wine and of course, sake. If you're a fan of fruity tipple, then we recommend sampling the umeshu. A liqueur made from plums, the harmony between the sweet and sour notes makes for a drink that is easy to down in one sitting. The drinks menu also has a number of playful, creative cocktails, such as the Sour Cherry + Cola. Starring sour cherry vodka, candied black olive liqueur and organic cola, the careful balance between the flavours makes for a drink that is out of this world.

So pop along to Bar Yoku to take a break from city life, and let the ambience and food whisk you away to the land of the rising sun.
