The crunch of a freshly baked baguette after your trip to the farmers markets, a post-run coffee and pastry in the sun, or a piping hot pie (or in our case, a pork bun) on a cold Sunday morning—here in Tāmaki we’ve got the full line-up of baked goods to satisfy any carb craving.  

We’ve rounded up our go-to picks for that bakery run—whether you’re a sucker for a kiwi classic, a modern Asian sweet, gluten-free sausage roll or a vegan croissant—we’ve got you.

Here are the best bakeries in Auckland. 

Hong Kong Bakery

We’re kickin’ it old school and giving this Auckland institution a shoutout, because if you haven’t made the trip for their famous pork buns, have you even lived? Hong Kong Bakery has been in the bakery game for 40 years and then some. They’re family-run and famous for the fluffy baked pork buns that should be on everyone’s eat list. We’re told that this is a necessary pitstop on the way from the airport, and we couldn’t agree more. Don’t forget to grab a signature coconut bun to balance out the savoury too. 

Beabea’s Bakery

Ben and Sarah opened up their neighbourhood bakery just over a year ago in Westmere, and we’re making a run to this side of town just for our pastry fix. They’re no stranger to the pastry game, with Ben rollin’ some of the best pastries in Tāmaki. Imagine Kiwi classics but better (a.k.a. pink coconut icing bun). Don’t leave without a pie too, it’s worth every bit of that flaky pastry that falls in the car seat on the drive home.

If you know about Cathy Fan’s signature mochi cheesecakes, and have been lucky enough to get your hands on their delicious Asian bakery-style flavours by the slice (or cake)—then it’s no secret that there’s always a new flavour popping off on the reg. From pop-ups and special collab items, to a new takeaway spot coming soon—we’re here for all of it. In the meantime, get the goods online or at a pop-up near you. 

VANIYÉ Patisserie

What’s a bakery without patisserie? has opened their Onehunga based HQ as of this week and you can get all your laminated pastry, hand-rolled baguette and beautiful Asian-inspired patisserie treats from both locations. Chef-owner Sonia incorporates delicate Asian flavours into her patisserie, like adzuki bean cremeux and matcha sponge, mouth-watering combinations like black sesame and mango, alongside French patisserie classics like the thousand layer millefeuille. For those who want to learn the secrets, keep an eye out for her masterclasses held at their newly-built, state-of-the-art Onehunga HQ atelier to hone in on your pastry skills.

Wen & Yen Bakery

We’re a sucker for a sausage roll, but did you know that you can also get a bangin’ gluten-free one? Enter , changing up the gluten-free and dairy-free pastry scene. If you know about their brioche doughnuts and pies (gluten and dairy-free options also available) then you’ll know you have to get there early before they sell out. Check out their socials for their limited edition donut of the month and gluten-free swiss rolls too.

Fort Greene

We’ve always loved the sourdough baguettes and pastries at , but since the opening of (making our wildest pastry dreams come true)—we dream of that lemon meringue cube croissant on the daily. Think perfect honeycomb layers and a toasted meringue with zesty lemon curd. Nothing beats enjoying their insane pastry line-up while watching the magic happen at the shop.

When the sourdough starter is over 20 years old, you know it’s going to be a good loaf. sourdough breads just contain flour, water, salt and time—making them naturally vegan and they’re easier to digest than other breads. Having started in a small wholesale factory in 1999, they began to build their rep across the restaurant and cafe scene as the go-to sourdough slinger. Now they’ve got multiple locations so you can get your fresh sourdough bread fix all across the city. We love their monthly special sourdough loaves with interesting additions (like smoked olives) and their dreamy sourdough doughnuts. 

Maison des Lys Pâtisserie

Plant-based pastry lovers, has got you. Pastry chef and owner Driscilla started up Maison des Lys to bring a dairy-free alternative to the pastry game. After missing French pastries when she moved to Aotearoa, she set out to research and develop vegan pastries and we’re so grateful she decided to share this with the city. The outer layers are crispy, flakey and the cross-section is oh so fluffy. Pair it with an oat flat white and you’ve got a dreamy vegan pastry breakfast. 

Florets Bakery

Maya Handley is the sourdough whisperer. Having trained and lived in New York for over a decade, she brought her artisan bread-making skills to Aotearoa and set up in Grey Lynn. Sourcing only sustainably-grown and local wholegrain flour, Maya and her team take great care in making wholegrain sourdough and other sweet treats (like their famous rye, sea salt and dark chocolate cookie). Pop in to this neighbourhood fave for your nutritious seeded loaf and sweet treat.

Mor Bakery

Having popped up in Aotearoa after returning from their patisserie stints overseas, Kelsie and Laura started their patisserie studies right here in Tāmaki. They met back in Aotearoa and began as a pop-up—bringing their beautiful laminated pastries to spaces like Roses back in 2022. A year later, they set up their own brick and mortar shop—you can now enjoy their pastries with a seat by the window, watching the world go by. We love their use of seasonal, fresh fruits amongst buttery layers of icing-dusted pastry. Swoon. 

Northside Bakery

This family-run institution has been in the bakery game since 1980 and recently had a modern day bakery glow-up last year. are paying homage to bakery classics and also bringing in the new at their newly renovated digs. Grab your cream donut, stock up on sourdough—and nab yourself a piping hot mapo tofu potato top pie while you’re at it.

Self-confessed biscuit fanatic Emily Shih runs her micro-bakery, , at Māngere Bridge—and while it’s not open to the public, you can sample her mouth-watering biscuit creations at pop-up events across Tāmaki. Emily’s attention to detail—from a biscuit’s texture, type of wholegrain flour, butter to sugar ratio—are all carefully considered, to form the most perfect, meltingly crisp, bite. Originally from Vancouver, she’s stepping up the bikkie scene, championing locally grown wholegrain flour and collaborating with local cafes such as Kōkako Organic Coffee Roasters—and currently, every Friday at Millers Coffee. You can also find her popping up at local markets like the Pocket Market. Pop the jug on and grab yourself a box of these treats, stat.
