THE VERDICT
After several months of rumblings, hospo heavyweights Maurice Terzini and Joe Jones link-up to bring you an authentic disruption to the city’s bar scene—Purple Pit.
Terzini is a well-versed restauranter and entrepreneur, where you’ll likely be familiar with Sydney’s Icebergs Dining Room and Bar and Jacksons on George. And here in Melbourne, Jones has made a booming reputation with Romeo Lane, the cocktail bar Melbourne misses dearly.
“We’re aiming to create something new and energising in a city that really needs it,” says Jones.
Purple Pit has been inspired by great European Hotel bars—think ‘Harry’s Bar’ in Venice. It’s a space that blends Jones’ bartending skills with Terzeni’s expertise into a drinkable delight.
“This place is for everyone to join in on what we love,” says Jones.
Sip into an intimate and romantic evening, located beneath the iconic Gothic Queens and Collins building, Purple Pit pays homage to Jones’ previous works with a curated menu of euro-centric modern cocktails and classic interpretations. You can’t go past the ‘Ticket to Ride’, a half martini straight from the freezer with a serve of champagne—and a spoonful of caviar topped with kochu creme fraiche to accompany this masterpiece
Aside from the elevated drinks list the Pit is providing a food menu that serves as a partner in crime for your late-night aperitivo indulgence. Hero dishes of house-made calzone with fillings of mortadella, and ricotta with fermented chilli, tomato tartare, and tuna loin with tangy and spicy notes—are all on offer.
The atmosphere has been cemented with design and interior by Daniel Dalla Riva and Filip Bjazevic, marrying a contrast between brutalism and luxe textures. And to finish things off, adding to the ambiance that is Purple Pit, the duo have combined their love of music into a seductive, warm and post-punk playlist—providing peak date night vibes.
