The Verdict

Newmarket Hotel was always going to be architecturally eclectic. The group behind Middle Park Hotel, Imperial Hotel and The Duke (so yes, they know what they’re doing when it comes to pubs) have revamped St Kilda’s favourite local.

The new menu moves away from Southern Californian vibes, instead championing crowd favourites with a cleverly sophisticated twist. DIY charcuterie boards are a non-negotiable starter for any cheese lover, with mix ‘n match choices including chorizo, pork rillettes, caramelised onions, French brie and haloumi. Good luck trying to exercise any form of self-control.

Wood-fired pizzas are too good to share with options including the Bianca with crème fraiche, spanish onion and bacon. A range of burgers and comfort food (there’s an entire section dedicated to it, because the team obviously know what we need on Friday night), includes a prawn and chorizo spaghetti, parmas, and a kilo of fried chicken ribs. Just in case you’re hungry.

Medium-rare steaks hit the table with chips, salads and your choice of gravy and mustard (the DREAM). Think garlic butter or caramelised onion sauce with hot English mustard or horseradish.

The interior is a cherry picked combination of the pub’s history and new-age details. Designed by Six Degrees, Newmarket Hotel marries concrete arches with a leafy outdoor garden; open brick with circular features and vintage red leather chairs. It’s a place your tastebuds and your eyes will happily explore.
