If you’re like most of us, you might be pretty excited to see a new year on the horizon. We’ve had a rough couple of years spent wearing track pants, working from home and being locked away from our beloved hair and beauty salons (if only temporary). 2020 and 2021 will be years that go down in history for all the wrong reasons, including some pretty awful skincare phenomenon’s (Maskne, we’re looking at you).
Thankfully, brighter days are on the horizon as we see salons reopen, track pants stored away and the return to the office for many. We’re also seeing some pretty cool new trends emerging when it comes to the world of beauty. Below, Dermal Specialist Lucy Macdougald gives her guide to the biggest beauty predictions for 2022.
Less Is More
Perhaps the biggest trend we will see in 2022 is the move towards ‘less is more’ in skincare. 2021 saw a rise in trends such as Skinimalism, Skin Fasting, and Skincare Micro Dosing and we will continue to see these kinds of trends grow. There will be a huge emphasis on no fuss approaches that turn their backs on trends from previous years such as K Beauty or 10 step routines. In 2022, the emphasis will be on stripping skincare routines back to the absolute basics, shunning the need for layer upon layer of ingredients. The good news is that these kinds of trends will save you time, money, bathroom cabinet space, and are set to reveal your best skin yet.
A lot of us don’t realise that the skin is actually quite powerful when it comes to being able to regenerate itself, however we often interfere with this process (with excessive cleansing or applying too many products). The 2022 trends that focus on a less is more approach encourages less product use and the introduction of high percentages of active ingredients. At Biologi, we really encourage this process where you rely on very simple approach to your skincare regime such as using a gentle but hardworking cleanser, an exfoliant (for once to twice a week usage), an active, yet multi-tasking serum like and a broad spectrum sunscreen.
Sun Protection Will Be Sexy
Who would have thought that lathering themselves in sunscreen would become a sexy thing to do? Well, 2022 is all about making sun protection sexy again. In fact, it’s already a trend that is well on its way, thanks to a host of new sunscreen brands that don’t leave that thick and sticky white sheen all over your face. Brands like are leading the way when it comes to sun protection, for every skin type and body (see more here). There’s also some incredible movements we’re seeing online, such as Lisa Patulny’s . Call Time on Melanoma is a timely reminder to get your skin checked, whilst pioneering a new social standard in sun safety. And who could go forget to mention the incredible range of hat brands that are sun safe yet fashion forward, such as Lack of Color.
The Rise Of Clean Cosmeceuticals
2022 will see a rise in Clean Cosmeceuticals, a new category of skincare that combines the best of two worlds—clean skincare and cosmeceuticals. It’s a welcome change for those that enjoy less synthetics in their skincare regime but want to reap the benefits of active skincare. Clean Cosmeceuticals is a new skincare category being pioneered by Biologi, where we came up with the concept due to our brand being in limbo land when it came to fitting in the right skincare category. Our products are considered cosmeceutical because of their 100% activity, yet our product formulations are made of undiluted plant extracts like Kakadu Plum and Finger Lime.
Thanks to our revolutionary extraction technology, we’ve been able to extract pure plant serums and bottle 100% of the active ingredients, keeping it stable for the skin and allowing for it to deliver faster results. However, our products are also clean and natural, so being labelled just a cosmeceutical brand is confusing for customers. Many cosmeceutical brands contain an array of synthetic ingredients and aren’t always safe for people like pregnant women, but our products are. And we didn’t want to just sit in the natural category because we’re a whole lot more than that too! So that’s what led to us coining the term Clean Cosmeceuticals and we’re seeing many brands follow suit. I predict this to be a really big trend in 2022, however it’s important to ensure you don’t get bamboozled by greenwashing. Do your own research when it comes to product labelling and be careful of any marketing trickery!
Introduction Of Intuitive Beauty
‘Intuitive Beauty’ is a new trend that is slowing catching on for many people and will likely gain more popularity in 2022. Intuitive Beauty is the process of using products in loose rotation, based on what your skin actually needs, rather than a strict, repetitive regime. Gone are the practices of step-by-step routines and instead we welcome products that really resonate with the skin, when it really needs it. Intuitive Beauty really delves into the skin issues at hand and treats them according to what’s actually going on, in a targeted way. Intuitive Beauty is trusting your instincts about what your skin needs, not just applying products as per your daily process. It’s also about trusting your instincts when you feel like something might not be quite right and knowing when to consult the experts. It encourages people to seek out the help from dermatologists and nutritionists to really get to the heart of the issue (or the gut). After all, trusting your gut can sometimes be the best way to go.
Superbeauty Ingredients
We’ve all heard the term Superfood, referring to the types of food that are nutritionally dense and have much-needed vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Superfood ingredients are famed for being able to protect our bodies from cell damage and help to prevent disease. But what about nourishment for our body’s largest organ, our skin? Enter, Superbeauty. Taking inspiration from its equally important counterpart Superfood, Superbeauty is also nutritionally dense, but for your face. It’s a collective of hard-working active ingredients that provide your skin with the ultimate nourishment, whilst protecting, reviving and rejuvenating skin cells.
Superbeauty focusses on a product’s performance on the skin and not the aesthetics of the packaging, smell or the marketing hype. Superbeauty breaks it down to what is actually going to work. Unfortunately, a lot of skincare products found on the market today only contain around 2% Active ingredients. Superbeauty is focussed on potent active ingredients, where we see ranges from 80 to 100% activity. When implementing a Superbeauty routine, look for products that only contain plant-based but potent ingredients, ideally with none or only minimal filler and synthetic ingredients. You’ll want to search for products that have active ingredients that makes up most of, or all of the product such as Biologi’s Bf Restore Face and Body Serum which is 100% active (in fact, all of Biologi’s products are 100% active).
